Hello internet people! This may be a lost cause, but I was wondering how many people out there on this here forum were interested in playing some pickup soccer right here in Grand Rapids.
We play Monday and Thursday nights from 6-8ish, you can stop by for a while, show up half-way, whatever. It's pretty laid back, we've got about 15 consistent people showing, we're not as creepy as you likely are, and we're not amazing (OK, some of us are, most are decent).
If anyone's really interested, let me know. Maybe then I will reveal the locations...

I may be interested. Golf league is winding down, but wedding plans are really ramping up, so I don't know how much time I will have. I also may be able to get 1 or 2 others, but they aren't the best players out there, soooo..... maybe not.

Me too. This past Thursday was the end of our summer league and our fall league doesn't start for a couple of weeks. I've been going out and playing two games a week since April, so this time off doesn't feel right.

Soccer is for fags and Europeans. Dirty fags and dirty Europeans. Translation choice #1: I'm too effin' fat to run for 90 minutes, so I'm going to make fun of people that actually enjoy the most popular sport in the world. Translation choice #2: I'm too effin' stupid to pay attention to action for 45 minutes straight without a timeout. I watch football. 5 seconds, then a 45 second break. I also think hockey is gay, because I can't follow it.

I don't much care for football. I enjoy hockey very much. I love baseball.
Soccer is boring as hell to watch. It's very good exercise for sure.
That said, someone once made the point that the first skill a child learns after they learn to walk is to kick a ball. After that they grow more and develop more skills. That is how I view soccer; it's a limited skill set and really doesn't allow people to do anything but run, kick, and juggle a ball with their feet. It's long and drawn out. It's full of Europussies flopping.
I'll pass.

I will agree that Soccer can be boring to watch, if you don't understand the little nuances of the game. But to say that it's a gay sport, or only fags play it, just shows one's ignorance. And yes, Europeans like to flop. So, before a kid can walk, he can throw a ball. Does that make being a pitcher easy? Just because you can kick the ball doesn't mean that you can kick it hard or accurate. If you don't believe me, I challenge you to meet me at a field sometime. I hate to keep throwing the ignorance card out there, but to say that Soccer is a "limited skill set and really doesn't allow people to do anything but run, kick, and juggle a ball with their feet" is ignorant, and bordering on stupid. Pitchers in MLB only throw the ball. Running Backs in the NFL only run carrying the ball. Some Basketball players in the NBA (I'm looking your way Shaq) can't hit a jumpshot outside of 4 feet. This might help... Think of soccer player this way - Without the ball, it is very much like Hockey. On defense, it's like Hockey or Basketball. With the ball, it's like being a pitcher. You need to know whether to kick the ball so it bends to the right, left, up, or down... and by the way, you need to be able to do this with either your right or left foot. And a Goalie is like in the NHL, but with a net that 8 yards wide X 8 foot tall. In short, don't knock it 'till you try it. (or at least know what the hell is going on on the field.)

I will agree that Soccer can be boring to watch, if you don't understand the little nuances of the game. Soccer people always say this. I get the little nuances. I understand the game. I have watched the game. I have tried to like the game. It's too boring. I'm not ignorant and I'm not saying that the players aren't talented. They do, however, only use a limited skill set. Maybe that's the appeal of the people who do like the game. It's not for me. I'd rather watch bowling on tv.

I'd rather watch bowling on tv. Too boring? Aren't you a baseball fan? Pitch.... wait..... pitch... wait.... etc, etc. You get 5-10 actual "plays" that are exciting each game, if you're lucky. Soccer is 45 minutes with no time outs, and no stopping, halftime, then 45 more. I get it's not your thing. That's great. I can't watch a lot of sports on tv. I get it. But to say that's it's a limited skill set proves that you don't get the game. There's a lot more skill involved in soccer than a lot of the games out there. In baseball all you have to do is hit the ball. The only real 'skill' in football is throwing the ball. Basketball, all you have to do is shoot the ball into the hoop. I could go on about every sport out there. Unless you are also considering all of the other sports to also have a "limited skill set" and are just singling out soccer, because it's not your thing. Insulting a game because you don't understand (i'm sticking to this) or like it is just childish.

.........and this is a prime example why soccer people get on non-soccer people's nerves:
Soccer people are so damned defensive about the sport. It's always "you don't get it" or "you're just ignorant" or "it's the worlds most popular game". Yah, well Ashley Simpson sold a million records but that don't make it good.
If a football, baseball, hockey or, hell, even NASCAR fan was told by somebody that they didn't care for their sport of choice, they might talk about it a little but generally they'd let it go.
Oh no, not soccer fan. Everyone who doesn't like it is either stupid, childish, or doesn't get it.
No my dear soccer fans: we get it. We just don't like it.

No one is getting defensive about you not liking it. I'm getting defensive that you're essentially calling it easy. Any fan of any sport would defend that.

I didn't call it easy.
In fact I said:
And you are getting defensive and insulting. I get your game. I don't like it. That doesn't make me childish.
I don't like chocolate ice cream, Bruce Springsteen, or the movie Superbad either. Does that make me childish? Of course not.

Saying that it has a limited skill set is saying that something isn't hard. I get defensive because you insult the game by saying that. Of all of the sports that I have played throughout the years (soccer, basketball, track, football, baseball, etc.) the one that is hardest for people to pick up is soccer.
Fuck it. This is never going to get through.
You win.
It takes more skill to play every other sport out there. All you do in soccer is run around and kick a ball.

Insulting a game because you don't understand (i'm sticking to this) or like it is just childish. While I do think soccer is a gay sport. I also know the players are all pretty talented as well. It does only take a limited skill set (run long distances, kick the ball, ability to slide). That being said baseball also really only takes a limited skill set as well (hit a ball, pitch a ball, catch a ball, throw a ball, run quick sprints). You could say that about most sports really...I would put both Hockey and Football in the most developed skill sets IMO just because of the constant contact involved in both. But really any sport is highly specialized to people with particular limited skill sets. However, to try and claim there is a lot more "skill" in soccer than a lot of sports out there is laughable at best because it might take more skill than Golf and Nascar...and that is about it, anything else it is the same skill or less. Soccer players would go crying to mommy if they had to set foot on a football field or hockey rink and experience true contact, unlike their flops.

But now the real question needs to be asked... Are soccer players athletes? Soccer isn't really my cup of tea. I played it in college intramurals, I've watched it frequently both live and on television, all that jazz. I appreciate the game and those who play it, but if I'm channel surfing and have to choose between a soccer pitch and a baseball game, I'm going hardball. I think that to play soccer at a high level isn't easy, but I also do think it is easier than it is to play other sports at a high level. Maybe that's not actually the case, but that is what I think. I'm sure that there are a lot more 'little' things that go into being a skilled soccer player than I could ever fully appreciate, but that can be said for all sports. The beauty of high level athletics is that those who participate make it look easy, be it football, basketball, soccer, baseball, or even auto racing... those who are really good make it look much easier than it really is.
