So, with all this opposition going on about the Wayland Casino and MichGO (Michigan Gaming Opposition and all the a-hole politicians who have no compassion), I am curious: who is for or against the casino? I am specifically FOR the casino because it is a Native American run casino, my aunt is part of the tribe, and they are suffering badly. I am against all casinos coming to West Michigan that are not run by Native Americans but support the ones that are run by them. And, I love casinos! I am excited for this one to come because that means I will either get a job there or be spending some time there. It will boost tourism and the economy, as it will be bringing thousands of jobs and helping a tribe that is suffering terribly. Anyway, any thoughts? Www.mbpi.org (Gun Lake Tribe official website) |

I'm not against a casino at all and if Wayland wants one and gets one good for them. What I think sucks is that there are two sets of laws. One for Native Americans and one for the rest of us.

Native Americans still have the same laws as regular citizens. However, on reservations (since they are federal land) everything is basically a felony. I go to a reservation every weekend and I see how terribly these people are suffering. It breaks my heart.

Actually I meant that in a good way, but may have said it wrong. Reservations shouldn't be federal land but Indian land. Also things that are not felonies otherwise shouldn't be felonies on Indian land. On the other hand if Casinos are legal for Indians to own they should be legal for the rest of us as well. I do feel bad that our Indian population has suffered so badly over the years and i hope their casino does well.

Native Americans have been treated unfairly (an understatement)since the first piece of Eurotrash stepped off the boat. That being said, I have no problem with any tribe receiving a casino license. Hell everyone else should donate their time to build the thing.  The only problem I foresee is the overabundance of casinos in the next few years. They have started building one just east of Battle Creek too. The Grand Rapids business group needs to quit their bitching and work with the tribe to benefit both interests. Next thing you know GR will demand that we close down the beaches on Lake Michigan cuz it's keeping people from going downtown. A-holes! |

That is merely our government holding up their end of the bargain for all the treaties they broke. The fact that our government stole their land, herded them onto reservations, and plagued them with smallpox-infected blankets might just have something to do with it. |

I noticed some small debate over how laws work on tribal land. I am not sure how it works overall, but for gambling here is the process: The tribes make their own gambling regulations, which are then reviewed by the state. If the state agrees to this they enter a compact with the state basically saying "The tribe allows and disallows this, and the state government allows them to define these regulations as such".
The state will never actually draft any laws in regards to gambling, its all made up by the tribes, and the state just signs it. Therefore a state can ban gambling, and still allow tribal gaming.
