I've often wondered why it is caller 8 for DTZ. That seems to be an incredibly small number given the number of affiliates.

Everyone is calling the same number. The only difference is that some poor intern would have to sit there longer and answer the phones leading up to the correct caller.

There are delays involved - for instance if someone is listening online or in a different market. Having it be caller 8 limits the ability of listeners to get in IMO. That said, they did mention calling in twice this morning so perhaps the phones weren't "reset" until the second time FB told people to call in.

In theory, I agree, but when I think about it seems like they get contestants from a good variety of markets. So I guess the listeners in those markets aren't experiencing a delay that would put them at a disadvantage. Obviously, if their local station carries the show on tape delay, that's another story.
As for streaming listeners, the delay could be a problem, but they're clear enough about when DTZ is coming up that I would think it should be fairly easy to anticipate and compensate for the delay. Yeah, you might ring in early, but it's pretty random anyway when 1,000 phones are trying to get through to 2 or 4 line simultaneously.

I seem to recall a comment made a few weeks back, where they said something about waiting a few moments before actually picking up any calls.

That's what I used to do. I would clear the lines, put them on hold, announce caller number whatever, and then leave them on hold for a bit. Then I would take one line off hold and whomever rang in first, that was my winner.

While not comprehensive of every participant, here is a list of recent winners:
Recent Winners Corey Gilding, Portland, ME - January 20, 2011 $3,200 Nick Morey, Harwich, MA - November 11, 2010 $5,600 Chad McClusky, Middleville, NY - August 5, 2010 $1,200 Bill Schuler, Sharon Springs, NY - July 15, 2010 $2,000 Jimi Minnema, Jenison, MI - June 3, 2010 $1,200 Thomas Gidlow, Carolina Shores, NC - May 13, 2010 $400 Mark Sosis, Forked River, NJ - May 6, 2010 $400 Frank Gillotti, Johnstown, NY - April 29, 2010 $1,600 Miguel Gonzalez, Windham, ME - April 1, 2010 $2,800 Brandon Morley, Grand Rapids, MI - February 11, 2010 $800
West Michigan area listeners and a scattering from the east coast. Notice there is no Tennessee listeners on there? That is one of their better rated locations.
I realize it's not scientifically accurate - perhaps Milton has a list of all participants and their locations. Still, it would appear as if there may be some dialing bias present.
Or I could be full of crap.

Or I could be full of crap. Ding! I have a statistician friend who is fond of saying "you are being fooled by randomness." I think there is a enough representation of various markets in that sample to suggest that there isn't a problem with dialing delay. I can't imagine why Nashville's local phone system would take any longer to connect to the backbone than any other market.

...Notice there is no Tennessee listeners on there? That's because this is a list of winners. Everyone knows that people from Tennessee aren't smart.

I don't think it would be the local phone system as much as perhaps, a radio delay? Eh, I guess I have to admit that's possible. I know the show has its own delay, or Free Beer wouldn't be able to dump when someone swears. And I'm positive that the satellite downlink doesn't come to Nashville any slower than it comes to Albany or anywhere else. But maybe the individual stations have different lengths on their own electronic delay systems. That's about the only thing that could explain it, if your theory is true. I also have to admit that I might have had a stroke while typing my last post. Holy crap..."found of saying you are being fulled by randomness?" Is that English?

See, Q just needed to be prodded. When you go too long between a good prodding, you tend to lose your edge.
