so your saying I should stop playing World of Warcraft? Yes you should, anything that requires a monthly fee to dedicate 40+ hours a week to it for no actual return is something you should not be doing.

What is your point? My kids have Celiac disease... if they consume wheat, rye, oats, or barely it attacks their digestive system and immune system. They have a gluten free diet and live normally... but they still have Celiac disease. We have a couple of kids with allergies to everything from peanut butter to the sun. But we deal with it. Kudos to you for dealing with it too!!

how bout 10 to 15 hrs a week? Why bother then because you'll only be able to see like 1/8 of the game you are paying for? I have plenty of friends who invest 50 hours or so a week into the game and are just being able to get to the Black Temple now. My one friend has over 2 years logged into his one character

Oh thats the best part, for a while there he was unemployed. Now he has a job, so he can only play like 6 hours a day so he uses the excuse "i dont play that much anymore". I'll be the first to admit I had a huge Everquest problem in high school...but guess what, it was high school, AND i would still go out of the house if something is going on. A lot of people who get addicted to these types of games do not.

Of course, I don't really have a choice, I have 6 kids at home who are always demanding my attention. But, to do it over, I wouldn't have it any other way. My life is great . . . I love my life . . I love my kids. If you haven't had them yet, do so, you won't regret it.

I have no real need to procreate and i fully intend that any kids i do have will be accidental, at least for the next 10 years anyway. I will let you know if i change my mind when im 35.

What about sex as an addiction? There are some in the counseling world that think sex could be a root addiction that because of the shame and stigma involved leads some to self medicate with booze, and or drugs. David Duchovny recently admitted himself to a mental hospital for sex addiction. In a sex obsessed United States I think it may be a hugh problem.

people w/ celiac disease!
I bet if they were starving to death they could eat wheat...just as much as the millions of humans did before them. Oh, woops, I forgot about the millions of ancient egyptians who carved on the pyramid walls..."stay away from wheat" the only nourishment they had back then.

I'll probably get railed for this but I do have extensive coursework in biology, physiology, pathology, biochemistry/molecular biology, etc so I'm not entirely talking out of my ass and this is all just my opinion.
Diseases are biological disturbances that impair normal function. They do not occur by choice (yes things we chose to do can affect their presence/severity but we don't consciously will them into existence). Addictions are by choice, no matter how predisposed (mentally/genetically) someone is, they do always have a choice to carry out the behavior, even in the very worst situation, the will power however weakened allows the option of not doing something. The exception to this is babies born to using mothers who are born chemically dependent-they obviously didn't have a choice and the detox is a terrible process to witness. I haven't found any studies as of yet discussing whether or not these children are more likely of having addictions/addictive personalities when grown so if anyone does please share it.
I guess my main problem with the whole "addiction is a disease" is that when you chose to use a harmful substance or activity you are doing it to change your situation in some way, to fill a need, to derive pleasure. Anyone capable of carrying out an addictive activity is also inherently able to realize there is an alternative route, however more difficult it may be. As others have said, calling addiction a disease is a way to remove responsibility from one's self. That doesn't fix anything.
